Beauty Balm: BB Cream

You guys might have been hearing a lot about beauty balms, or bb creams, lately. It is supposed to basically be a tinted moisturizer on steroids. They are a combination of a moisturizer, spf, face serum, and primer. It sounds like the ideal summer foundation.

I was first introduced to it by Birchbox when I got the Dr Jart+  version and I liked it so much I actually ordered the full size version.

There is so much water in this product that your skin looks insta-dewy

Since then I have seen these everywhere! It seems like every makeup brand is making one.  I have seen ads for Smashbox, Too Faced, and Stila  and I know there’s more to choose from at Sephora.

There’s even more to choose from!

Chocolate Covered Banana Pops

Now that it’s summer and super hot I have had a constant supply of popsicles in my freezer. In anticipation of one of my favorite people coming home from Taiwan, I made sure to make one her favorite treats, chocolate covered banana pops!

The supplies:

Supplies (without the parchment paper)

A big bunch of bananas,

wooden skewer sticks

semi sweet chocolate chips

a make shift double broiler

parchment & wax paper

I peeled the naners, cut them in half and put skewer sticks through them.

Ready to dunk

I do not have a double broiler right now so I macguivered one with a small pot and loaf pan. Careful trying this at home folks, but it has worked perfectly for me. I put water in the pot and brought it to a slow boil and put the bag of semi sweet chocolates in the loaf pan. It slowly melted and I used a spatula to mix it up until it was completely smooth. Then I dunked the bananas on skewers and spread the chocolate around the banana with the spatula.

Makeshift double broiler

Dunk & Twirl

I placed the chocolate covered bananas on the parchment paper and wrapped them up in saran wrap to stick in the freezer.

When you take them out of the freezer you get a chilly and tasty treat!

Found this article today.  It discusses the idea that the acne on your face is linked to underlying factors occurring in your body (dehydration, allergies, hormones, etc.) and provides a few tips on how to possibly remedy the situation to clear up your skin.  I thought it’d be helpful to some of you!  Click here to read the full article.

Favorites from the Weekend!

21 May

Hermits
We spent the weekend at home refinishing an old cedar trunk (post later this week), reading, and lounging by the pool.  I didn’t get around to sewing but possibly this week… *Liz*

We refinished this bad boy.

Milestones

This weekend Colby’s youngest brother graduated from Brophy and so we went to the graduation ceremony on Sat. They honored a selection of the students that won awards for extraordinary achievements and it made me think about where I was when I graduated from high school and where I am today. I am still trying to figure out exactly where my place is and where I want to go in life and  it was wonderful to get a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the future. *Katie*

…with sewing projects
I’m starting to feel the itch again.  I’m not sure if I’m 100% ready after all the time I spent on my previous dresses, but we’ll see where this weekend leads.  Here are some of the things I’d really like to sew. *Liz*

Black maxi dress, colorful maxi skirt, crochet shorts

…with Birchbox
Have you guys heard of this yet? It’s a genius concept. You pay $10 a month and you get a little box in the mail with sample sized products. You can kind of tailor it to which type of products and what skin/hair types you have but ultimately it’s a complete surprise. I got my first one this month. Trying awesome new products and getting mail!  Two of my favorite things!! AND this month’s theme was Gossip Girl! *Katie*

Included in the box: Color Club nail polish in Disco Nap, Dr. Jart + Waterfuse BB cream, Kerastase Cristalliste Lumiere Liquide, Stila sparkle waterproof liquid eye liner, Kerastase Cristalliste shampoo and conditioner samples and notecards.

Problem Skin

My skin has caused me a lot of grief over the years. It’s not the worst in the entire world but can be frustrating. I have really sensitive skin and have also struggled with sometimes oily, combination skin and pimples. I have tried quite a few products and found what works best for me, so this is a list of the most effective products I have found:

Phisoderm Anti-Blemish Gel Facial Wash

This face wash has really been the best that I have ever found but I can’t find it in any of the typical stores (Walgreens, Target, etc) so I buy this on drugstore.com in bulk. It’s really cheap so that’s awesome, but the best thing is that it gently washes my face and keeps it (relatively) break out free.

Clarisonic

I put my face wash on this bad boy to get a super scrub. If I haven’t washed my face yet and I have had a face full of makeup I typically do a pre-wash. With just a little bit of face wash I do a quick rinse so when I use the Clarisonic it really gets the chance to get everything out of my pores. This also lets products soak deeper into your fresh, clean pores so if my skin is acting up I Clarisonic it (it can be a verb) and put a treatment cream on top. The Clarisonic is also supposed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles over time, so…. that’s cool.

Proactiv Repairing Lotion

This stuff is really incredible. I can’t use it too often because it dries my face out a lot, but it really makes a difference when I apply it after washing my face before bed when I have a breakout.

Biore Pore Strips

These are as effective as they are fun. A little gross, but it’s awesome being able to see something work!

Ponds Cold Cream

This is a makeup remover extraordinaire. This gets the most waterproof and difficult makeup off in no time. I just put it on my eyes, rub it in, and remove with a tissue. I’ve used this since extravagant Halloweens growing up!

Bare Minerals Moisturizer

This moisturizer is light and effective. It makes my skin feel hydrated but quenched, and doesn’t cause extra breakouts. I put this on under my makeup in the morning.

…with Road Trips
All of the flights to LA filled up so Katie and I are going to fly into San Diego, then road trip it up to LA.  Bring on the dance tunes, it’s ’bout to get crazy. *Liz*

This is how we dance.

…with Amy’s Thai Coconut Soup
This little soup was my dinner last night. It sat in my pantry for a little while because I bought it after I had an amazing Thai coconut curry at Thai Rama and thought it wouldn’t live up to what I had at the restaurant. Fast forward to Thursday and I thought I would just give it a try. It was good!It has sweet potatoes, mushrooms, carrots, and more. Different, but I would recommend giving it a try! *Katie*
